Cultivation of Streptococci and Enterococci

Recommendation:

Streptococci and Enterococci are facultative anaerobic bacteria. Although some species of this genera may grow under aerobic conditions, we still recommend to culture all strains affiliated to these genera under microaerophilic conditions. The growth of many strains is stimulated in a CO2 enriched atmosphere (5% CO2), especially if strains are cultured on agar plates. For some Streptococci beta‐hemolysis only appears under reduced conditions.

Furthermore, most species of the lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, and Weissella) grow microaerophilic, whereas only a few of them require obligate anaerobic conditions.
